Buying The Correct Bike For You

As you know, there are numerous reasons to start cycling. Some decide they want to cycle more now because the price of gas has risen so high, and because it costs so much to keep a car maintained. Some decide to cycle because they want to have less of an impact on the environment when traveling.

And there are some who like to cycle simply because it is fun. No matter what the reason is for choosing a bicycle, there are some things you should keep in mind before you decide. Bicycles should not just be chosen because of their looks or their brand name. Contained hereafter are some hints and tips you can use to pick the bicycle that is perfect for you.

The first thing to ensure is you get a bike that is the right size. For this you must calculate your inseam. Your inseam is the amount of inches from the bottom of your foot, up the inside of your leg to your groin. When you get a bike you should be able to lay both feet flat to the ground if need be. This is mainly for safety and will allow you to use your feet to stop the bike without the brakes if needed.

For road bikes take away 9 inches from the total of your inseam. This is because of the size of the tires on your road bike. Road bikes are meant for city cycling—the tires are thinner and work best on concrete paving. With a mountain bike you will need to take away around one foot from the inseam. Again this is to account for the type of tires you will be using. Mountain bike tires are thicker than road bike tires, designed for rocky terrain. You can use mountain bikes for city cycling, but the opposite is not true and they are nowhere near as good on city streets as road bikes.

How many gears will you use on a regular basis? Make your choice by knowing that if you ride in mountainous areas you’ll need more gears than when riding in a flat area. Many beginning cyclists think that the more gears a bicycle has, the better it is. You may never even get around to using all the available gears. Why spend extra money paying find for something that you don’t need? Of course, if your cycling bicycle is going to be your primary mode of transportation you might need to make sure you have enough gears to handle rough situations.

Lots and lots of different features and options are out there as you look for a new bicycle. From fashion to safety, you have a multitude of choices to make. You can feel unsure of yourself, and a bit overwhelmed, as you attempt to purchase a new bike. A little time spent looking into the choices will allow you to relax and buy the best bike for you.

Try to understand your choices before you go shopping. You’ll be glad you did!
